CryoMet

Metrology for reliable liquefied energy gases measurement

The project (24GRD07 CryoMet) has received funding from the European Partnership on Metrology, co-financed by European Union Horizon Europe Research and Innovation Programme and from the Participating States.

Tunable joins CryoMet as a project collaborator

The CryoMet project welcomes Tunable as a new project collaborator. Tunable will join forces with our partner  RISE in WP2 to determine the reliability of (bio-) Liquified Natural Gas (LNG) composition and the online determination of LNG density.

Tunable will contribute to our project with equipment, technical support, and expertise related to the measurement of fuel gas quality. Tunable will provide a calibrated T1000-20 analyser for measuring LNG quality. This advanced infrared transmission spectroscopy-based analysis instrument will be used to support high-resolution and time-resolved composition measurements during the composition and variation experiments, and also for validation activities regarding the development of an online/offline method for the analysis of six components: methane, ethane, propane, n-butane, i-butane, C5+ and carbon dioxide). Gases that do not absorb in the infrared, such as nitrogen and oxygen, are calculated by mass balance based on the measured infrared-active components.

TUBITAK and VSL will prepare static reference gas standards representing a classical LNG composition, biomethane composition, and natural gas composition for calibration. RISE will perform the gas compositional variability experiments that mimic in-field variations from potential LNG sampling and vaporization errors. Tunable AS device will be tested in a laboratory environment using certified gas standards containing methane, carbon dioxide, oxygen, nitrogen, and ethane.

The results from this collaboration will support CryoMet’s LNG composition monitoring by providing useful data for the definition of uncertainty budgets of gas composition measurements in cryogenic and LNG-relevant applications. This will be a key milestone to develop reliable measurement methods for (bio-)LNG, one of the main goals of CryoMet.
