Metrology for reliable liquefied energy gases measurement

WP1 prepares data on LNG flow meter measurements

WP1 aims to determine the measurement reliability and uncertainty of (bio-)LNG flow meters in-field. Additionally, to develop traceable (bio-)LNG and LH2 meter diagnostics and demonstrate, using SI-traceable reference data sets, a target accuracy of 0.5 % for (bio-)LNG flow meters.  

During the first months of the project, five meters have been collected using different technologies (turbine, ultrasonic, Coriolis), with support from flow meter manufacturer partners. VSL completed assembly of their 2-inch and 4-inch lines at their Rotterdam facility and performed calibrations using LNG (Figure 1). The data is now under analysis and will be presented during the Cryomet webinar on the 4th of September.

Then, the results will be compared with previous ones and will be combined with on-site data (test campaign scheduled in 2027) to determine the uncertainty from LNG terminal installation effects using a cryogenic LDV (CryoLDV, also known as “RDCL” in French) LNG flow standard (Figure 2).

The final results will be published in Deliverable D1, which will present a publicly available SI-traceable reference dataset on (bio-)LNG flow meter errors and measurement uncertainty. The deliverable will include a comprehensive evaluation of the effects of two-phase flow, meter insulation, measurement reproducibility, temperature cycling, and installation conditions on flow meter performance. The project aims to demonstrate a target measurement accuracy of 0.5% for (bio-)LNG flow meters, providing valuable guidance for industry and supporting the development of more reliable and harmonised measurement practices.
